Virginia Birth Records

virginia

Virginia has been maintaining birth records since
June 1912 when the state passed a law making it mandatory to record vital events such as births, however the Virginia Department of Health in Richmond has a collection from 1853-1896 as well.

Virginia is a closed record state, which means that certified copies can only be requested by the person named on the certificate, as well as their immediate family members (including spouse) and lawyers representing them. Birth records become public once they are 100 years old, which is for births in 1924 and before.

Virginia Vital Records Office

The office that handles birth records from 1912-2024 (and 1853-1896) for the entire state of Virginia is The Department of Public Health, where they provide birth records, marriage records, divorce records, and death records.
