North Carolina Birth Records

North Carolina has been maintaining birth records since March, 1913 when the state passed a law making it mandatory to record vital events such as births.

Some birth records before 1913 are available, but only from the specific county office where the birth occurred.

You can check for older records at the North Carolina State Archives and the Genealogy section of the North Carolina State Library.

North Carolina Vital Records Office

The office that handles birth records from 1913-2024 for the entire state of North Carolina is The Department of Health & Human Services, where they provide birth records, marriage records, divorce records, and death records.
