Maine Birth Records

maine

Maine has been maintaining birth records since 1892 and all vital records since 1923 are physically housed at The Maine Office of Data, Research and Vital Statistics. Vital Records from 1892-1922 are kept at the Maine State Archives.

Maine is a closed record state, which means that certified copies can only be requested by the person named on the certificate, as well as their immediate family members (including spouse) and lawyers representing them. Birth records in Maine become public once they are 100 years old, which is for births in 1924 and before.

Maine Vital Records Office

The office that handles birth records from 1892-2024 for the entire state of Maine is The Maine Vital Records Department in Augusta, where they provide birth records, marriage records, divorce records, and death records.
