Pennsylvania Birth Records

pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has been maintaining birth records since January 1906 when the state passed a law which made it mandatory to record vital events such as births.

Many birth records before 1906 are available, but only from the county office in which the person was born. The Pennsylvania Department of Health in New Castle does NOT have them on file.

Pennsylvania is a closed record state, which means that certified copies can only be requested by the person named on the certificate, as well as their immediate family members (including spouse) and lawyers representing them.

Pennsylvania Vital Records Office

The Pennsylvania Department of Health handles birth records for all areas except Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie and Scranton.
